Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

Sketching on location is a different discipline than studio drawing: the light moves, the seat is uncomfortable, and people walk through your scene. This course teaches the real working methods of urban sketchers — direct ink line without underdrawing, eyeballed perspective, a controlled watercolor palette, and a timing system that lets you finish before the shadows shift. You leave with a sketchbook habit, a packed kit, and several complete location spreads.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Assemble a single-bag urban sketching kit and name every pen, brush, and paper by spec

02

Draw confident, committed ink line directly on location without a pencil underdrawing

03

Construct believable streetscapes using one-, two-, and three-point perspective by eye

04

Lay fast, luminous watercolor washes with a limited six-pan palette and correct timing

05

Place convincing figures, vehicles, and signage to give a scene scale and life

06

Plan and finish a complete on-location sketchbook spread in 45 to 90 minutes
