Solder electronics that actually work the first time

A practical, settings-driven path from your first joint to confident repairs

Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

Soldering for Hobbyists teaches the craft of joining electronic components with solder using a temperature-controlled iron, the right flux, and a repeatable technique. You progress from station setup and safety to through-hole and SMD work, desoldering, and three complete repairs (a headphone cable, a battery clip, and a board-level joint). Every lesson uses specific temperatures, solder alloys, tip styles, and inspection criteria so your results are consistent rather than lucky.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Select an appropriate temperature-controlled iron, tip, flux, and solder alloy for a given hobby task

02

Produce a shiny, concave through-hole joint and inspect it against IPC-A-610 acceptance criteria

03

Solder and inspect 0805 and SOIC surface-mount parts using drag and tack-and-reflow methods

04

Desolder through-hole and surface-mount components without lifting pads or tracks

05

Repair common hobby items including a headphone cable, a battery connector, and a cracked board joint

06

Set up a safe, well-ventilated workspace and handle lead, flux fumes, and ESD correctly
