Stop the cracking, scorching and sticky finishes for good

Learn the conditioning, caning, curing and finishing workflow that turns a block of Sculpey into work you can sell.

Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

Polymer clay looks forgiving until your pieces crack, scorch or stay sticky, and most of those failures trace back to conditioning, oven temperature or the wrong sealer. This course gives you the working knowledge professional makers use: a Mokume-gane and Skinner-blend caning workflow, brand-by-brand cure charts, and a sand-to-2000-grit-then-buff finishing routine. By the end you can plan, build, bake and finish a small figurative or decorative piece you would be proud to sell.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Condition any polymer clay brand to full pliability and diagnose under- versus over-conditioning

02

Mix predictable, repeatable colors using a parts-based recipe and the Skinner blend

03

Hand-build stable forms over armatures and foil cores that survive the oven

04

Construct and reduce a simple cane to produce repeating pattern slices

05

Cure pieces correctly per brand with an oven thermometer and tenting to prevent scorching

06

Sand, buff and seal finished work to a durable matte or glossy surface
