Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

This beginner course teaches the durable method behind a good pet portrait rather than one species or one medium. You will learn comparative animal anatomy for the heads of dogs, cats, horses, and birds, the likeness landmarks that make a portrait read as that specific animal and not a generic one, and directional layering techniques that turn flat shapes into believable fur and feather. You will finish able to grid and analyze any reference photo, render a finished portrait in coloured pencil on the right paper or digitally in Procreate or Photoshop, and handle the commission workflow that turns the skill into paid work.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Construct an animal head on its real skull, muzzle, and eye-socket structure so the portrait sits correctly in three dimensions

02

Analyze a reference photo with a grid and identify the likeness landmarks that make a portrait read as that individual animal

03

Render convincing fur in directional layers, matching coat length, growth direction, and value across light and dark animals

04

Paint a wet, living animal eye and a moist nose using highlight, reflection, and rim-light to bring the portrait to life

05

Produce a finished pet portrait both in coloured pencil on suitable paper and digitally in Procreate or Photoshop

06

Run a commission from reference brief and quote through to delivery, including how to fix or combine bad client photos
