Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

This hands-on course teaches surface pattern design for someone starting out, taking you from one drawn motif to a finished seamless repeat you can sell or license. You will learn the geometry behind invisible repeats, the half-drop, brick and diamond grids, then design motifs that hold together at scale, lock in a disciplined colour palette and produce multiple colourways. You will finish able to build a tiling tile, present it as a croquis with colourways, and hand off correctly sized files for spoonflower-style fabric printing, wallpaper rolls and stationery, plus understand how surface licensing deals are structured.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Construct seamless tiles using the offset method so motifs cross every tile edge and the repeat reads as invisible

02

Build half-drop, brick and diamond repeat structures and choose the right one for a given motif and scale

03

Design balanced motifs and fillers using foreground, midground and ground layers to control density and movement

04

Reduce a busy reference into a disciplined colour palette and produce three to five coordinated colourways from one tile

05

Prepare a croquis and colourway sheet that presents a collection the way fabric and stationery buyers expect to see it

06

Package print-ready files at correct repeat sizes, DPI and colour mode for fabric, wallpaper and stationery production
