Stab loose wool into something that holds its shape

A complete beginner sculpting workflow on the fibres and needles felters actually use

Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

This course builds the full needle-felting workflow used to make firm 3D animals and figures, not flat pictures. You will select core and surface wools, match needle gauges to coarse shaping and fine finishing, sculpt rounded forms that hold their shape, blend colour like paint, and add a pipe-cleaner armature for poseable limbs. By the end you can plan and complete a small standing animal and know exactly why each fibre and needle choice gives you the density and finish you want.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Select core wool, batting, and top fibres matched to the form and finish you want

02

Match triangle and star needle gauges (36 to 42) to coarse shaping versus fine finishing

03

Sculpt firm rounded 3D forms that hold their shape and join cleanly

04

Blend wool colours and apply surface fibre for smooth, painterly coverage

05

Build a wire and pipe-cleaner armature for poseable limbs and stable standing figures

06

Finish a sculpture with a tight, fuzz-free surface and safe needle habits

Module 1

Module 1: Fibre, Needles, and Working Safely

Choose the right wool and needles, set up a safe station, and learn the single stabbing motion the whole craft is built on. Getting fibre and needle gauge right is what makes wool firm instead of fluffy.

Module 2

Module 2: Building Firm 3D Forms

Turn loose wool into dense, rounded shapes that hold together, then combine them into a figure. Density and clean joins are what separate a sculpture from a fluffy blob.

Module 3: Colour, Surface, and Texture

Wrap firm cores in coloured surface fibre, blend colours like paint, and create fur, spots, and smooth skin. This is the layer that makes a grey lump look like a real creature.

Module 4: Armatures, Faces, and Finishing

Add wire skeletons for poseable and standing figures, set faces that bring a sculpture to life, and finish to a clean, durable result. These are the steps that turn a competent shape into a piece you are proud to show.
