Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

Memoir is not autobiography, it is selection and shape applied to lived experience. This course moves from raw memory to revised draft using the tools working memoirists actually use: the writing-self versus experiencing-self split, the five-part scene, narrative arc, and emotional truth. You will leave with a structured manuscript outline, polished scenes, and a submission-ready short personal essay.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Distinguish memoir from autobiography and identify the controlling idea that turns a life into a story

02

Render lived memory as immersive scene using the five-part scene model and concrete sensory detail

03

Control narrative distance by separating the experiencing-self voice from the reflective writing-self voice

04

Architect a full-length memoir or personal essay using a chosen structure such as braided, frame, or hero's-journey arc

05

Write about real people responsibly by applying ethics, consent, and legal risk frameworks for defamation and privacy

06

Revise a personal essay through line edits and submit it to literary journals using a researched submissions plan
