Hand-Stitch Leather Goods That Outlast Everything You Own

Master the saddle stitch, tool and dye real veg-tan, burnish edges to glass, and build a wallet and bag you are proud to carry

Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

This course teaches the core craft of hand leatherwork for beginners: choosing the right hide weight and tannage, cutting accurately, and joining with the two-needle saddle stitch that machines cannot replicate. You will learn how to swivel-knife and stamp a tooled design on cased leather, dye and condition with Fiebing's and Pro products, and burnish edges to glass. Each module pairs clear technique with the material facts and real numbers, ounces to millimeters, stitches per inch, awl angles, so your results are repeatable rather than lucky, ending with a finished wallet and a small bag.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Select leather by weight, temper, and tannage for a given wallet, belt, or bag project

02

Cut accurately and mark a stitch line with consistent spacing using pricking irons or a stitching chisel

03

Execute a tight, even two-needle saddle stitch and lock it so it never unravels

04

Tool cased leather with a swivel knife and stamps, beveling and backgrounding for depth

05

Dye, condition, and seal leather evenly without blotching, then burnish edges to a glassy finish

06

Assemble a bifold wallet and a small bag with hardware, gluing, and sequencing that hold up to daily use

Module 1

Module 1: Leather, Tools, and a Workable Bench

Understand how hide weight, temper, and tannage behave, assemble a starter tool kit that actually matters, and set up a small bench you can cut and punch on safely. This module is the difference between leather that tools and burnishes beautifully and a stiff, glued-up chrome-tan that fights you at every step.

Module 2: The Saddle Stitch and Edge Finishing

Master the two-needle saddle stitch that no machine can replicate, learn to thread, tension, and lock it, then bevel and burnish edges to a glassy finish. This is the heart of hand leatherwork and the skill that separates handmade goods from glued-and-machined imitations.
