Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

This beginner course teaches the durable craft of pen-and-ink illustration rather than a single artist's style. Through tool control, the conventions of weighted line, the texture systems of hatching and stippling, and the discipline of spotting blacks, you will learn to turn loose pencils into finished, reproducible line art. You will finish able to ink with a dip nib and a brush, render value and form with line texture, balance a page with solid blacks, and reproduce every technique digitally in Procreate or Clip Studio Paint.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Control a dip nib and a brush to produce smooth, tapered, pressure-varied ink lines

02

Apply line-weight conventions so flat outlines gain depth, light, and focus

03

Render value and form using hatching, crosshatching, and stippling at controlled densities

04

Spot solid blacks deliberately to balance a composition and lead the eye

05

Clean up and finish ink art by removing pencils and correcting mistakes without damage

06

Reproduce every inking technique digitally with brushes and settings in Procreate or Clip Studio Paint
