Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

Learn the harmonica the way blues players actually practice it, from choosing a Hohner Special 20 in C to pulling a clean, in-tune 4-draw bend and soloing over a 12-bar blues in 2nd position. You will isolate single notes, control your draw and blow bends, and map the blues scale across the cross-harp layout. By the end you can play a recognizable melody, improvise with the blues scale, add hand vibrato, and take your first steps into overblows.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Choose, hold, and maintain a 10-hole diatonic harmonica and identify every hole's blow and draw note

02

Isolate clean single notes using the pucker and tongue-block methods without bleeding adjacent reeds

03

Bend draw notes in holes 1 through 6 to hit the missing chromatic pitches in tune

04

Play in 1st and 2nd position (straight harp and cross harp) and explain the difference

05

Play the blues scale in 2nd position and improvise simple licks over a 12-bar blues

06

Add hand and throat vibrato, sustain chords, and attempt your first overblow
