Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

This course covers the full repair workflow for residential 1/2-inch gypsum board: diagnosing and fixing nail pops, dents, and holes from a pinhole to a 12-inch blowout. You will learn which joint compound to reach for, how to tape and mud a seam in three coats, how to sand to a paint-ready finish, and how to match common wall and ceiling textures like orange peel and knockdown. Every technique is tied to real products, dry times, and tool numbers so your patch disappears once the roller passes over it.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Identify drywall damage types and select the correct compound and patch method for each

02

Patch nail pops, dents, and holes up to 6 inches using mesh, paper tape, and patch kits

03

Cut and install a backed or California patch for holes larger than 6 inches

04

Tape and three-coat a butt or tapered seam so it reads flat under raking light

05

Sand and pole-sand a repair to a Level 4 or 5 finish without gouging the paper

06

Match orange peel and knockdown texture and prime the patch before painting
