Count it right, stitch it even, finish it well

A complete beginner counted cross-stitch workflow on the Aida, floss, and tools stitchers actually use

Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

This course teaches counted cross-stitch the way experienced stitchers actually work, building on Aida cloth, a hoop, and DMC stranded cotton. You will choose and prepare fabric, find the centre, read a charted pattern, separate and thread floss, and stitch full crosses, half and quarter stitches, and backstitch outlines that stay crisp. By the end you can plan, stitch, wash, press, and frame a small finished piece and know exactly why each habit keeps your work even and the count correct.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Set up Aida cloth, a hoop, and a needle matched to the fabric count

02

Find the centre, read a symbol chart, and keep an accurate stitch count

03

Separate, thread, and manage DMC stranded cotton with even tension

04

Work full cross-stitches with a consistent top-stitch direction across the piece

05

Stitch fractional stitches and backstitch outlines for shape and detail

06

Wash, press, mount, and frame a finished piece so it lasts

Module 1

Module 1: Fabric, Tools, and Setting Up

Choose the right Aida count, floss, needle, and hoop, then mount the fabric drum-tight and find the centre. A square, well-tensioned start is what every counted stitch later depends on.

Module 2

Module 2: Reading Charts and Starting Thread

Learn to read a symbol chart, plan a stitching route, and start and end threads without knots. Confident chart-reading and clean thread starts are what keep the back tidy and the count honest.

Module 3: Stitching: Full Crosses and Even Tension

Form a full cross-stitch correctly, keep every top stitch facing the same way, and control tension so the work lies flat. Consistent crosses and tension are what separate neat counted work from a lumpy patch of colour.

Module 4: Fractional Stitches, Backstitch, and Finishing

Add fractional stitches and backstitch for shape and detail, then wash, press, mount, and frame the finished piece. Detail stitches and careful finishing are what turn a block of colour into a sharp, lasting work.
