Course Overview

What this course is designed to develop

Learn to turn kitchen scraps and yard waste into dark, crumbly compost by mastering the four levers that decide success: carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, moisture, oxygen, and particle size. You will mix browns and greens to a roughly 25 to 30 to 1 ratio, build a hot pile that hits 55 to 65 degrees Celsius, run a low-effort cold pile, diagnose a stinking or slow heap in minutes, and set up a worm bin indoors. By the end you can build, feed, turn, troubleshoot, and harvest compost, and apply it to beds, containers, and lawns without burning your plants.

Learning Outcomes

What the learner should be able to understand, build, or execute.

01

Balance browns and greens to a target carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of roughly 30 to 1

02

Choose a composting method and bin matched to your space, climate, and effort level

03

Build and run hot and cold piles, turning a hot pile to hold 55 to 65 degrees Celsius

04

Diagnose and fix the four common failures: smell, pests, slow breakdown, and a dry pile

05

Set up and feed a vermicompost worm bin and harvest castings

06

Test for finished compost and apply it correctly to beds, containers, and turf
