Course Overview
This beginner course teaches the discipline of botanical illustration from direct observation of living specimens. You will measure and draft accurate graphite studies, then render them in transparent watercolour and pen-and-ink. Throughout, you balance the scientific demand for botanical accuracy against the compositional and tonal choices that make a plate beautiful.
Learning Outcomes
Measure a living specimen with dividers and grid methods to draft proportionally accurate graphite studies
Render form and surface in graphite using directional shading, burnishing, and a controlled value scale
Mix and apply transparent watercolour washes including wet-on-dry layering and dry-brush detail
Execute pen-and-ink line, stipple, and cross-hatch to describe botanical texture and tone
Diagnose botanical features (venation, phyllotaxy, floral parts) and depict them with scientific accuracy
Compose a finished single-specimen plate that balances accuracy, design, and annotation
